While most navies are adopting free-swimming submersibles as the basis of their submarine rescue capability, the US Navy (USN) has pursued a solution based on an RORV for the second phase of its Submarine Rescue Diving Recompression System (SRDRS) programme. SRDRS is a US government-owned system operated and maintained by Phoenix International under the leadership of the USN's Deep Submergence Unit. Phoenix provides a core staff on North Island in San Diego, California, to maintain the system in ready-to-deploy status at all times.
