Operation 'Cast Lead', Israel's campaign in the Gaza Strip from 27 December 2008 to 18 January 2009, has positioned the Israel Navy (IN) - for the first time in its history - as an integral partner in the land battle. But while Israel was successful in damaging the Hamas militia on the ground, the challenge of halting the copious flow of arms from Iran through the Red Sea and the Mediterranean to the region's militant groups remains unresolved.rnTraditionally focused on maritime patrol and coastal defence missions, the IN decided to take a more pivotal role in the Gaza Strip campaign - a response to Hamas rocket attacks on the border between Israel and the Gaza Strip - as soon as the Israel Defence Force (IDF) began its preparations. Hetz-class (Sa'ar 4.5) 58 m fast attack craft subsequently exercised sea-ground support, developing a communal language with IDF infantry units ashore.rn"We consider ourselves as one more brigade serving under the IDF's Gaza Division," a senior IN source acknowledged. When IDF'ssixarmoured brigade teams moved into the Gaza Strip, each one was assigned a Naval Commando (Shayetet 13) team and a naval officer was placed in every brigade headquarters (HQ) to co-ordinate the naval support.
