The Indian Navy (IN) commissioned two 49 m Car Nicobar-class fast patrol craft (FPC) at a ceremony in Chen-nai (Madras) on 16 February.rnThe vessels are the first in the IN to be fitted with waterjet propulsion systems, the Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD)said.rnThree MTU 16V 4000 M90 diesel engines rated at combined 8,160 kW drive the three Kamewa 71SII water-jets, giving the 260-ton craft a maximum speed of 35 kt and a range of 2,000 km at 13 kt.rnBuilt by government-owned Garden Reach Shipyard & Engineers (GRSE)rnin Kolkatta (Calcutta), INS Car Nico-barand INS Chetlatwere launched on 23 and 27 November 2007 respectively and are the first pair in an expected class of 10 vessels.rnA further two craft, Cinque and Cheriyam, were launched by GRSE at its Rajabagan facility in Kolkatta on 16 July 2008. Production shifted to Rajabagan after it was acquired by GRSE in 2006.
