Abu Dhabi Ship Building (ADSB) has secured contracts worth over AED935 million (USD255 million) to build 12 more Project 'Ghannatha' fast craft for the UAE Naval Forces and upgrade Its existing inventory. The new missile-armed fast combat vessels will be built to a modified Ghannatha design while the 12 in-service Ghannatha fast troop carriers will become two sub-classes: six will be modified as mortar platforms; the remainder will continue as troop carriers but will receive additional armament. An AED771.1 million contract for the 12 new vessels - an enlarged version of the original 25 m Ghannatha design incorporating a 1.5 m hull stretch and more powerful MTU 12V 2000 M93 engines - was announced at the IDEX 2009 conference in Abu Dhabi on 23 February. It is understood that each vessel will be fitted with box launchers for four MBDA Marte Mk 2/N surface-to-surface guided missiles. Swede Ship Marine, as ADSB's principal subcontractor, will take responsibility for the design modification package and build the first three new vessels in Sweden. The nine follow-on craft will be constructed by ADSB at its shipyard in Abu Dhabi's Mussafah industrial area.
