Construction of Russia's second Yasen-class (Project 885) nuclear-powered attack submarine, Kazan, commenced at the Sevmash yard in Severodvinsk on 24 July.rnMeanwhile, first-of-class Severodvinsk - which was laid down in 1993 - is now expected to be floated out in December with delivery to the Russian Federation Navy following in 2010.rnDeveloped by the St Petersburg-based Malakhit design bureau, the Project 885 boat is equipped with eight vertical launch system launchers for Novator Alfa SS-N-27 cruise missiles. It also has canted torpedo tubes and spherical bow sonars, both new features in Russian submarines.
