The guided-missile trials barge Longbow arrived in the Mediterranean in November to conduct system qualification firings of the Principal Anti-Air Missile System (Sampson) -PAAMS(S) - for the UK Royal Navy's new Type 45 air defence destroyers.rnLongbow is expected to begin live-firing serials at the Centre d'Essais de Lancement Missile (CELM) range off southern France in the second quarter of 2008.rnIt will be the second major guided-weapons system qualification programme undertaken aboard the vessel, which was used as a test platform for the GWS 26 Mod 1 Vertical Launch Seawolf in the late 1980s.rnHaving been laid up for 14 years, Longbow was resurrected for the PAAMS(S) trials by BMT Marine Projects, which won a contract in 2001 from MBDA UK - the prime contractor and design authority for the PAAMS(S) programme - to refit, convert and operate the barge.rnBMT Marine Projects in turn contracted Fleet Support Limited (FSL), located at Portsmouth naval base in the UK, to undertake the refit and conversion work, following an international tendering exercise.
