The first Legend-class National Security Cutter built for the US Coast Guard's Deepwater programme has commenced sea trials.rnThe 4,112-ton Bertholf sailed from Northrop Grumman's Pasca-goula, Mississippi, yard on 4 December to begin Intensive testing in the Gulf of Mexico.rnMachinery trials were due to be completed in December and the ship is on course for delivery by mid-2008, assuming successful completion of acceptance trials.rnThe Legend design employs a combined diesel and gas-turbine propulsion system to achieve a max-rnimum speed of 28 kt and a range of 12,000 n miles at 9 kt.rnArmament Includes a Phalanx Mk 15 close-In weapon system, a Bofors 57 mm gun and four 12.7 mm machine guns for maritime interdiction.rnThe vessel has an aft launch and recovery area for two rigid-hull Inflatable boats up to 11 m in length, and a flight deck for two Multimis-sion Cutter Helicopters or a single helicopter and two Eagle Eye vertical unmanned aerial vehicles.
