The first of three Soryu-class (Improved Oyashio class) attack submarines on order for the Japanese Maritime Self-Defence Force (JMSDF) has been launched at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' Kobe shipyard in Japan.rnThe lead boat, which entered the water on 5 December, is named Sor-yu. Its two sisterships, which are scheduled to launch in October 2008 and in 2009, will also have names ending in -ryu, a Japanese defence spokesman told Jane's.rnAt 84 m long and 4,200 tons submerged, Soryu is significantly larger than the 11 original Oyashio-class diesel-electric boats (81 m and 3,500 tons) in order to incorporate a Kockums Stirling air-independent propulsion (AIP) system. Components for the AIP system, which is designedrnto enhance the vessel's stealth and special operations capabilities, were supplied by the Swedish company for assembly in Japan.rnThe spokesman described the Stirling AIP as "the best part of this boat", adding: "It means that the Japanese navy is happy with Oyashio-class submarines' battle capability as a whole, [but] the vulnerability caused by snorkelling is a more serious problem."
