Recent activity by the Russian Federation Navy has suggested a desire to recapture lost ground. Jon Rosamond studies events and considers the reaction of the West When Su-33 'Flanker D' interceptors and Kamov helicopters from the Russian Federation Navy's Admiral Kuznetsov carrier task group were spotted in the vicinity of one of Norway's offshore oilfields in December 2007, the impact was almost immediate. Wary of the risk of aerial collisions, StatoilHydro, the Norwegian oil and gas producer, hurriedly suspended its own helicopter flights to and from the Gullfaks platforms, which rise from the North Sea some 180 km northwest of Bergen.
