The US Navy (USN) cancelled its Extended Range Guided Munitions (ERGM) programme on 24 March following firing trials in February, during which four out of five rounds missed the target. The USN announced it would "cease funding Raytheon's efforts" in developing the 5-inch rocket-assisted guided projectile just weeks after the trials at White Sands missile range in New Mexico. John Patterson, a spokesman for Raytheon Missile Systems, told Jane's: "We are disappointed in this decision and feel that it is premature given the critical point we have reached on this engineering development programme. "We are now on the verge of proving ERGM can reliably provide precision fire capability, which was the objective of the 20-round test sched- uled for September of this year. The 40 people who worked on ERGM have already been re-assigned to other programmes."
