At least six of Georgia's small fleet of fast attack and patrol craft were destroyed during Russian military incursions over the disputed territory of South Ossetia. Photographs taken in Georgia's Black Sea naval base at Poti show three vessels - the Matka-class (Project 206MP) missile craft Tbilisi, the Project 360 patrol boat Tskaltu-bo and an unidentified unit - sunk or ablaze. In addition, the Georgian Coast Guard's Lindau-class (Type 331) patrol ship Ayety was holed at the stern and sunk alongside. Reports in state-run Russian media claim that ships of the Russian Federation Navy (RFN) fired on and sank the Stenka-class (Tarantul) cutter Giorgi Toreli near the coast of Abkhazia, a second separatist region of Georgia, on 10 August. According to these unconfirmed reports, up to four Georgian craft made two attempts to attack the Russian ships, with the Nanuchka- class corvettes RFS Mirazh and RFS Shtyl returning fire and sinking one of the boats. Russian sources also claimed to have sunk a second Georgian vessel during the engagement, a Zhuk-class (Project 1400M) coastguard patrol craft.
