Taiwan's defence ministry has described the acquisition of eight die-sel-electric submarines from the United States as a national priority, according to a report from the country's state-controlled news agency on 27 July. Speaking through the agency, a ministry spokeswoman, Lisa Chi, rejected media suggestions that the Taiwanese government was considering a plan to construct the submarines indigenously and instead reiterated the administration's desire to obtain the boats from the US. "Taiwan's determination to purchase these defensive weaponry systems will not change, even though cross-strait relations are thawing," she added. As well as the submarines, Taiwan has previously requested US permis- sion to purchase AH-84 Apache attack helicopters, UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters, 66 F-16C/D Block 50/52 fighters, PAC-3 air-defence missile units and P-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft.
