The US Coast Guard (USCG) celebrated its 218th birthday on 4 August by commissioning the first of eight planned Legend-class National Security Cutters. USCGC Bertholf, the 4,112-ton Northrop Grumman-bullt flagship, is the first to emerge from the coast guard's troubled USD24 billion Deep-water modernisation programme. In April 2008, eight major defl-ciences were Identified during Ber-tholf's acceptance trials, with Information security being one of the greatest challenges. Other operational headaches Included Improper rigging of the stern gantry hoist, an Inoperable incinerator, a magazine loading platform Judged unsafe and a misaligned brake on the starboard anchor. Linda Williams, a coast guard spokeswoman, told Jane's on 6 August that seven of the eight operational deficiencies have been resolved, but that problems remained with an "unstable" machinery control and monitoring system.
