The Iraqi Navy (IqN) accepted the first of three consignments of 7.7 m Defender fast patrol boats at Umm Qasr naval base in early October 2008. The six aluminium craft, which have a maximum speed of 46 kt, were delivered by US-based shipbuilder SAFE Boats International. A second batch of 10 Defenders is expected to arrive at Umm Qasr in December, with the third and final set - also numbering 10 units - due in January or February 2009. Displacing about four tons, the deep rigid monohull is equipped with a Scalable Integrated Navigation System including a Furuno 4 kW X-band radar with a range of 36 n miles linked to a 10.4 inch colour LC display, and a Mk 16 Mod 8 machinegun mount. The procurement of 26 patrol boats is part of the IqN's '26-15-4-2' acquisition programme, which is intended to rejuvenate its forces and allow it to assume responsibility for maritime security operations (MSOs) in the northern Persian Gulf in 2010.
