The first of four coastal patrol ships (Buque de Vigilancia de Litoral -BVL) for the Venezuelan Navy was launched at Navantia's San Fernando yard in Spain on 16 October. The 1,500 ton, 76 m-long Guaica-macuto (GC-21) is expected to be commissioned in 2009 and will be employed on maritime security operations in Venezuela's exclusive economic zone. Procurement of the quartet was announced in April 2005 as part of a package including four larger offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) and reportedly worth EUR1.7 billion (USD2.3 billion).
