The US Defense Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is to push the bounds of science and engineering by exploring the concept of a hybrid vehicle that can morph from an aircraft to a boat to a submarine. Described by the agency as a submersible aircraft, the proposed platform is intended to transition between airborne, surfaced and submerged modes in order to support clandestine insertion missions in coastal waters. In a broad agency announcement issued on 3 October, DARPA calls for research proposals that demonstrate the feasibility of an air vehicle design that can manoeuvre underwater, identify the major technology barriers that need to be overcome, and outline experimentation/simulation methodologies to demonstrate technical solutions. Initial proposals are scheduled for submission no later than 1 December and multiple contract awards are anticipated.
