French shipbuilder DCNS has said that it expects to hand over the first of two Scorpene submarines to the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) in late January 2009 following customer acceptance tests. Meanwhile, the company's Spanish partner, Navantia, rolled out the second of the diesel-electric boats at its Cartagena yard on 8 October 2008. DCNS and Navantia were awarded a MYR4 billion (USD1.2 billion) contract for the two 1,757-ton submarines -Malaysia's first - in June 2002, with DCNS building and outfitting the forward sections at Cherbourg and Navantia responsible for the aft sections. The first of class, Tunku Abdul Rahman, was named at Cherbourg in October 2007 and began a four-month period of builder's sea trials in late January 2008. These were run from Lorient in Brittany, and included a test-firing of a Black Shark heavyweight torpedo.
