Lockheed Martin Maritime Systems and Sensors has been selected by the US Navy (USN) as prime contractor for its Expendable Mine Neutralisation System (EMNS) programme.rnEMNS is intended to equip the USN's 14 Avenger-class mine counter-measures vessels with a one-shot mine inspection and disposal system to replace the existing AN/SLQ-48 system.rnCompared to the ageing and maintenance-intensive SLQ-48, which is based on a large remotely operated recoverable vehicle, EMNS was designed to provide the ships with an imp-rnroved reconnaissance capability, positive identification of mine threats, reduced neutralisation mission times, and reduced maintenance in time and spares.
