As the world's oceans become more cluttered with anthropogenic sound, naval active sonars remain the usual suspect behind mass marine mammal strandings. Katy Glassborow looks at measures navies are taking to understand and mitigate this risk. In July 2006, the US-based Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) environmental campaign group won a court order forcing the US Navy (USN) to stop using mid-frequency active (MFA) sonars during the 'Rim of the Pacific' (RIM-PAC) exercise off the coast of Hawaii.
