Germany's maritime defence industry is weathering its biggest ever period of consolidation in the face of perpetually stagnating national defence spending and restrictive export controls. JNI looks at the issues and opportunities facing the Industry's major players. Even by the standards of a global industry famed for its labyrinthine ownership trails and seemingly endless purchase and sales of companies, 2005 will go down as a turbulent year for the German maritime defence industry. The year opened with ThyssenKrupp's virtual takeover of the country's shipyard operations — leaving only Luerssen in private family hands — and looks like closing with BAE Systems' sale of Atlas Elektronik and its key radar and unmanned underwater vehicle activities. As JNI was going to press, there were seven major bidders for the company— EADS, Finmeccanica, L-3 Communications, OHB, Saab AB, Thales and ThyssenKrupp — and under the German government's protectionist policy of trying to retain the defence industry in German hands, EADS and ThyssenKrupp appear to have a key advantage.
