The UK Royal Navy (RN) Type 23 frigate HMS Westminster will undertake two sets of trials in 2005 to pave the way for the introduction to service of the new Sonar 2087 active passive low-frequency variable-depth sonar system in early 2006. Designed to increase the ability of the Type 23 frigate to hunt down quiet submarines operating in oceanic and littoral waters, Sonar 2087 combines a variable-depth low-frequency transmitter (operating at frequencies down to 500 Hz) and a passive towed array (operating down to 100 Hz). The system, which replaces the earlier Sonar 2031Z low-frequency passive towed array, will operate in conjunction with the existing Sonar 2050 medium-frequency hull-mounted sonar and integrate with the Outfit DNA(l) command system.
