Established as a refit and repair contractor, DML Group is today moving ahead with plans to develop its capabilities in life-cycle management, capability upgrade and shipbuilding, as part of a strategy to broaden its business base beyond surface ship and submarine upkeep. DML, the UK-based shiprepair and engineering contractor, was created in 1987 to run the operation of Dev-onport Royal Dockyard, and purchased the yard from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) 10 years later. Currently turning over about £400 million (US$774 million) per year, the company employs more than 5,000 staff at its Devonport facility in Plymouth, and at satellite sites in Bristol, Tamworth, Keyn-sham, Dorking, Faslane and Appledore. "Growth over the company's first 10-12 years of our existence was very much along a horizontal axis," says Peter Whitehouse, DML's director of corporate development. "Extending our original role as a refit and repair facility we have become increasingly involved in fleet management, playing a more proactive role in helpin&the MoD and the Royal Navy [RN]."
