Naval gunfire support is enjoying a renaissance, given the perceived utility of light mobile forces and renewed enthusiasm for projection from the sea. As a result, more navies are investing in larger, gun-armed ships, Although redolent of broadsides from battleships, naval fire support has long ceased to be exclusively a matter of gunnery. From the standpoint of those at the 'sharp end' who are responsible for controlling the effects ashore, fire support activity already encompasses the application of fires from a number of additional sources, including sea-based aircraft and helicopters, submarines and adjacent land units. From a 'blunt end' standpoint (shipboard effects-generation), guns are still the mainstay, although missiles and rockets can be expected to assume an ever-increasing role as the littoral battlespace is extended.
