The relief effort to aid victims of the Southeast Asian tsunami posed specific challenges to the navies taking part. Guy Toremans talked to Capt Antonio Hernandez-Palacios, commanding officer of 'Respuesta Solidaria', the Spanish contribution to the international aid operation. The tsunami that struck Southeast Asia on 26 December 2004 prompted a massive international relief operation. Aceh province in northern Sumatra, Indonesia, was one of the worst-hit areas in the region. It was this area in which the Spanish government decided to make its own contribution — Operation 'Respuesta Solidaria' — to the provision of humanitarian aid. To this end, the Spanish Chief of Staff of Defence decided to generate a Spanish contingent with three components: 1. SPS Galicia, with a medical team, an embarked air wing, an undersea defence technology (UDT) unit, a landing craft unit and a force-protection unit; 2. three transport aircraft from the Spanish Air Force; and 3. a battalion of army engineers.
