The Romanian Naval Forces stands at a crossroads in its strategic, operational, and capability development. Despite an ageing fleet, the navy is increasing operational deployments in support of national and NATO requirements, and doing so in maritime theatres - such as the Black Sea and the Mediterranean - facing growing security challenges. At the same time, the service has outlined its future fleet ambitions, beginning with procurement of four corvettes, and a major combat systems upgrade for its two ex-UK Royal Navy Type 22 frigates.
