While Charles de Gaulle was in refit, the only route open for the embarked air group to maintain a level of 'cat and trap' carrier currency was to detach for training with the US Navy (USN). Accordingly, in early April 2018 a total of 12 Rafale M aircraft from Flottilles 11F, 12F, and 17F transited from Landivisiau, Brittany, to Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia to participate in the eight-week Exercise 'Chesapeake 2018' deployment. Also making the trans-Atlantic crossing was a single E-2C Hawkeye (from Flotille 4F at Lann Bihoue, Brittany) and a total of 350 personnel (including aircrew, maintainers, flight deck teams, air traffic control, and strike planning specialists).
