The Belgian Armed Forces marked a major milestone in the renewal of its naval fleet on 15 March when the government announced the selection of a French consortium comprising Naval Group and underwater systems and robotics group ECA for the supply of 12 new-generation mine countermeasure vessels (MCMVs). The selection marks the first phase of the Belgian/Netherlands programme to jointly acquire 12 MCMVs and four multipurpose frigates. Belgium is leading the MCMV component of the project, while the Netherlands has taken charge of the frigate acquisition.
