Ship-launched countermeasures - radio-frequency (RF) chaff, infrared (IR) decoys, RF corner reflectors, and active electronic warfare (EW) devices - have long been part of the anti-ship missile defence (ASMD) armoury. Launched to an appropriate distance and bearing off the defended ship, these expendable devices are designed to break the 'kill chain' by either confusing the targeting solution, distracting the onboard seeker of the inbound anti-ship missile in its search phase, or inducing a seduction in the terminal phase to break missile lock.
