While efforts by US Navy (USN) leadership failed last year to cut short the planned lifespan of Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Harry S Truman (CVN 75) and reduce the nation's carrier force by at least one ship, there is little doubt the service wants to continue on that track - probably with another vessel later this decade. It is equally obvious that the Trump administration and members of Congress have no desire to cut carriers. Indeed, the stated goal is to increase the carrier force to 12 from the current legally mandated requirement of 11.
