The Philippine Navy has revived a long-absent anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capability with the commissioning of ex-Republic of Korea Navy (RoKN) Po Hang-class corvette BRP Conrado Yap. The service last had this capability on its Rizal (Auk)-class and PCE 827-class corvettes, the bulk of which were transferred from the United States to the Philippines in the 1960s and 1970s. Although the ageing vessels underwent several refurbishment programmes throughout their service lives with the Philippine Navy, the operability of the ships' ASW equipment was never restored and either became obsolete or non-operational as the years progressed.
