The rethinking and reprior-itising of US Navy (USN) and Marine Corps (USMC) operational concepts in light of the return to peer or near-peer competition has sparked an effort to truly integrate the services in the way they operate their forces and acquire their equipment, systems and platforms. The effort could culminate in a budget request for Fiscal Year (FY) 2022 that takes into account intra-service trade-offs instead of treating the Department of the Navy spending plan as one big money pot, with the USN and USMC simply taking their share, according to sources involved in planning the future fleet make-up.
