Australia's largest-ever defence procurement, the AUD89 billion (USD63 billion) Future Submarine programme, has recently encountered some headwinds, but construction of the first of 12 conventionally powered Attack-class boats appears set to begin near the South Australian capital of Adelaide in 2024. If all goes to plan, the first of the 4,900-tonne Future Submarines will be launched in 2030 and delivered to the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) in 2032 under Project SEA 1000.
