Since the inception of Lockheed Martin's F-35 Lightning Ⅱ Joint Strike Fighter (JSF), the short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) F-35B variant has been viewed as something of a 'problem child' for the programme when set against its more straightforward conventional take-off and landing (CTOL) F-3SA and carrier variant (CV) F-35C stablemates. With the complicated and heavy lift-fan apparatus and rotating engine nozzle needed for its STOVL capabilities, the design of the F-35B has resulted in a relative shortfall in the aircraft's performance that, while not compromising its overall strike fighter mission, has resulted in it being the least capable of the three variants in terms of speed, range, and weapons load.
