While the hallmark of US Marine Corps (USMC) operations has always been its ability to mobilise quickly, marine leaders say the service now needs to move even faster and operate more like the USMC Pacific theatre island-hopping forces in the Second World War. Such a reset will require the marine corps to develop new equipment for intelligence-gathering and communications, a new fleet of small ships, and an updated plan on how to transport marines and equipment from ship to shore, sustain them for the duration, and then return them to the ship.
