A flooding accident earlier this month in Brazil's lead Riachuelo (Scorpene)-class diesel-electric attack submarine could further delay the vessel's commissioning, Janes has learned. The bow compartment of first-in-class Riachuelo (S 40) was flooded with saltwater on 11 March because of a valve issue while docked at the Itaguai Naval Complex in Itaguai, the State of Rio de Janeiro, the Brazilian Navy confirmed in a statement released the same day. The nature, extent, and cause of the valve issue have not yet been disclosed as the navy investigates the mishap.
