When Austal USA failed to secure the construction contract in April 2020 for the US Navy's (USN's) FFG(X) class of guided-missile frigates, it appeared that the Alabama shipbuilder's days of constructing USN vessels could be numbered. With both of the company's mainstay USN shipbuilding programmes - the Independence-class Littoral Combat Ships (LCSs) and Spearhead-class expeditionary fast transports (EPFs) - set to conclude early this decade and without the FFG(X) contract, there were few prospects for naval work on the horizon that could keep the yard running.
