May 2021 was a notable month in terms of the collective NATO naval capability gathered across the North Atlantic. Central to this was an emerging NATO command structure designed to bring more naval heavy metal into theatre, according to officials and analysts. The UK Royal Navy's (RN's) two new aircraft carriers were at sea: first-in-class HMS Queen Elizabeth and its multinational carrier strike group (CSG) participated in Exercise 'Strike Warrior to conclude operational sea training prior to commencing its CSG 121 deployment, while HMS Prime of Wales continued post-commissioning trials, training, and certification. On 19 May the two carriers also sailed together for the first time.
