The operating characteristics of conventional Er-doped fiber ring lasers and semiconductor-optical-amplifier (SOA)-introduced hybrid-type fiber ring lasers are experimentally compared. Under both the continuous wave (CW) and small signal modulation operating conditions, hybrid-type fiber ring lasers show better suppression of beating noise originating from the beating of longitudinal modes. In mode-locked operation, the supermode noise and relaxation oscillation noise are completely suppressed in the hybrid-type fiber ring lasers; thus, very stable optical pulse generation is realized without using a feedback circuit for controlling cavity length and/or temperature.
