Reorientation of Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Molecules Using Acoustic Streaming

We have demonstrated the reorientation of cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) molecules in a thick cell by acoustic streaming. In the thick cell, the initial CLC does not have a planar alignment but a focal conic state in spite of the surface being coated with a planar polyimide and rubbed unidirectionally. The acoustic streaming effect changes the CLC alignment from a focal conic state to a planar alignment. The alignment of the treated cell including its defects is improved by storing the cell at room temperature for several days. Although the focal conic cell shows a low transmittance and a broad stop band due to light scattering, the treated cell reduces scattering and has the sharp band edges in the stop band.
