Synthesis of YAlO_3 up-conversion powder using a co-precipitation technique

Yttrium aluminum perovskite (YAP), or YAlO3, shows promising potential as an up-conversion (UC) host material due to its excellent fluorescence properties and relatively lower phonon energy as compared to those of the other complex-oxide host materials. Herein, YAlO3 was synthesized using the convenient co-precipitation technique, and single-phase YAP powder was successfully developed; it was characterized by thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and field-emission scanning electron microscopy. We found that the hexagonal and orthorhombic single-phase YAPs were crystallized at 950 degrees C and 1200 degrees C, respectively. Additionally, Er3+(1, 5, 10 at%)-doped orthorhombic YAP powders were similarly synthesized to study their fluorescent properties; they exhibited a fluorescence spectrum due to the I-4(13/2) to I-4(15/2) energy transition, and green and red UC spectra due to the (H-2(11/2), S-4(3/2)) to I-4(15/2) and F-4(9/2) to I-4(15/2) energy transitions, respectively. We believe that these findings will be highly effective in the fabrication of various efficient RE3+:YAP UC phosphors.
