Tokaido Shinkansen to Undergo Major Renovations

Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central) embarked on a major infrastructure renovation as a countermeasure to aging deterioration of civil engineering structures on the Tokaido Shinkansen, starting April 2013. JR Central is going to reinforce by neutralization measure of concrete, replacing members and others various structures such as concrete bridges, steel bridges and tunnels, which make up around 46% (total length of 239km) of the whole line, from now on over 10 years. On the basis of the Tokaido Shinkansen passing by for nearly half a century since its inauguration in October 1964, an extensive renovation work will be performed as preventive maintenance to take appropriate action in advance of failures caused by accumulated deterioration. It is going to take 10 years until March 2023.
