International standards for various products and systems have been developed mainly in Europe. Since the World Trade Organization was launched in 1995, the use of those international standards has been widely recommended in the world, and railways are no exception. As the international standardization gains momentum and international standards increase their importance, there have been surging demands for Japan to get ready to address this matter. In order to meet these demands, Railway International Standards Center (RISC) was set up in Railway Technical Research Institute (RTRI) on April 1, 2010. Here we would like to introduce the outline of the Center.
