摘要

Several years ago, we introduced a physical model for so-called "dependent scattering" or "crowding" effects on the optical properties of paint films.1 As used in reference (1), the terms "dependent scattering" and "multiple scattering" have the following meanings: 1. Dependent scattering: the phenomenon in which the scattering efficiency of a unit volume of scattering particles is dependent upon the concentration of that particle. 2. Multiple scattering: the re-scattering of already scattered light. Both dependent scattering and multiple scattering (as defined above) have significant effects on the opacity of TiO_2-pigmented paints. Their effects are also observed in light scattering by systems such as latex particles in air, water, or resin.
