Metal-containing epoxy resins [Er-M(II)] have been prepared by the reaction of Schiff base metal complexes and epichlorohydrin in basic medium. All the synthesized monomers and polymers were characterized by elemental, spectral (IR, ~1H-NMR, and ~(13)C-NMR), and thermal analysis. Coatings of the metal-containing epoxy resins were prepared on naval steel strips and subjected to physicomechanical and anticorrosive tests. The surface morphology and thickness of the coatings was found to be 75 ± 10 μm. The Zn(II) chelated epoxy resin showed lower I_(corr) values of 0.482, 0.520, and 1.02 μA/cm~2 in NaCl, NaOH, and HC1 solution (3.5 wt%), respectively. In addition, the antimicrobial activity of the prepared coating strips was carried out by using minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration methods against 5. aureus, B. subtilis, E. coli, and P. aeruginosa. It was found that the Er-Cu(II) showed higher antibacterial activity than other metal chelated epoxy resins.
