摘要

The hardiest literatures of antiquity are, ironically, often the most difficultnto use for historiographic purposes. While historians enthusiastically embracenthe newly discovered archeological archive, knowing implicitly how to use itsnmaterials, equally ancient materials are suspect for having been compellingnenough to warrant the preservation of copying and studying. Such is the fate ofnthe Babylonian Talmud (henceforth “Talmud”), the central canonical text ofnLate Antique Judaism. Although the Talmud is arguably the largest literaryncorpus of Late Antiquity, the paucity of local external controls of either thenarcheological or the literary variety finds historians increasingly fleeing thenstudy of Rabbinic Babylonia for the greener pastures of Rabbinic Palestine withnits parallel Greco-Roman literary sources and rich Syrian and Palestiniannarcheology. This is quite unfortunate because the Talmud is a tremendousnarchive of religious traditions and cultural practices and its complex authorshipnand genre makeup give it a texture unique among literary works.
