In this issue of the Journal, four articles address proactive risk assessment of health care processes. Each article provides useful insights on certain aspects of risk assessment and its methodologies, strengths, and challenges. The articles collectively afford a broad overview and better understanding of the possibilities and limitations of formal proactive risk assessment. However, some questions remain: How reliable is it? Does it actually improve safety? Is it worth the effort?
