For our hospital, the code sepsis protocol is a new technique for identifying and treating severe sepsis and septic shock. Our modification of the original Rivers et al.~3 protocol has allowed us to develop a larger, more comprehensive approach to identification and treatment of patients presenting in the ED with suspected or confirmed sepsis and has resulted in a decrease in our in-hospital rates of asbolute and relative mortality.
