Joseph J. Janes's new edited volume, Library 2020: Today's Leading Visionaries Describe Tomorrow's Library, provides a futurist look at the state of libraries just six short years away from today. The author's predecessors in predictions have not always fared well. Harvey Brown and Humphrey Gambler Bousfield predicted a glorious future of circulation work in their 1933 study of college and university libraries. Keyes Metcalf, then director of Harvard University Libraries, predicted in 1941 that paper disintegration would reduce space needs in research libraries. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Stanley Wilder and others predicted a coming librarian shortage. These examples illustrate a few of the visionaries who have missed the mark.
