摘要

This paper revisits the revised stratigraphy of the Bida Basin by Rahaman et al. (2019). We rebut their errors and misconceptions in proposing the Ahoko Shale as a formation and their assertion that it is younger than the Agbaja Ironstone Formation. Field evidence and palynological and geochemical data are provided in support of the widely accepted stratigraphic framework of the basin. The distinct sedimentological and petrographic features of the sandstone facies of the Lokoja (e.g., unidirectional cross stratification and compositional immaturity) and Patti (e.g. clay drapes, herringbone cross beddings and mineralogical maturity) formations discussed herein also support their different origins and depositional processes, and indicate that it is illogical and unacceptable to lump the sandstones together as Lokoja Formation. In view of the data provided, the elevation of the Ahoko Shale to a formation by Rahaman et al. (2019) is conjectural because their revision lacks field and analytical evidence.
