This study investigates the weather patterns and air traffic situation for the terminal arrival/departure area of Frankfurt Airport during thunderstorm occurrences. The focus in analysing both weather and air traffic is on the use of the total lightning observations.rnIt has been shown that although thunderstorms and flight delays are undoubtedly related, punctuality values below 50% are a result of simultaneous occurrence of other weather impact factors like low visibility, low ceiling and high windrnspeed. In addition, thunderstorm location in relation to the runway configuration is an important factor in determining actually occurring delays.rnThe mean distance of aircraft to an electrically active area decreases with the decrease in available airspace, with distances less than 1km occurring mainly during approach or departure in controlled and crowded airspace. This points to a need for operational lightning forecast tools for airport terminal arrival/departure areas in order to keep aircraft at a safe distance from thunderstorms.
